Prostate cancer is now the most frequently diagnosed cancer in U.S. men, and the second leading cause of male cancer deaths.  An increased detection rate of prostate cancer has been credited to the availability of the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test.  The PSA test in combination with a digital rectal exam has become the standard for prostate cancer screening.  Prostate cancer screening is typically recommended to be done yearly starting at age 50, however, it should be performed yearly starting at age 40 for African-American men or in a men with a family history of prostate cancer in a first-degree relative. 

The MKW Urology Center counsels patients on screening for prostate cancer.   Additionally, in combination with Optima Health Care-Elliot Hospital, we staff a free, yearly prostate screening clinic, complete with PSA and digital rectal testing.   This is held during National Prostate Cancer Awareness Week each September.
