What is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

The prostate is a male reproductive organ located adjacent to the bladder which surrounds the urethra, the tube which carries urine out of the body.  BPH is a non-cancerous condition where the prostate enlarges and causes urinary symptoms.  It is more common with increasing age:  more than half of all men over age 60, and 8 of 10 over age 80 have BPH.

What are the symtoms of BPH?

Some symptoms include:  slow force of stream, frequent day and nighttime urinating, burning, urgency, hesitancy, straining, dribbling, and bleeding.

When should a person seek treatment?

If the symptoms are affecting the quality of your life, it is time to seek treatment.

How is BPH treated?

Several options exist:

Watchful waiting (do nothing for the time being)
    Drug treatment
Minimally invasive procedure (example - Thermotherapy)
Traditional surgical procedures (example - TURP)

Your physician will evaluate your symptoms and conduct medical tests to help you decide what treatment is best for you.
